Activities

Recreation

Opportunities for sport and exploration abound. Anglers will have no trouble filling their days. Hunters, birders and nature watchers will find their target.

Otherwise, we want to mention that the islands surrounding Friendly Passage will never be developed. They await your daytime exploration. A “secret” cove on a neighboring shore hides a secluded beach for picnics and swimming. Across the channel is Voyageurs National Park. You are minutes from the park’s legendary Kettle Falls Hotel where you can lounge and dine the way the lumberjacks once did.

Swim from the island dock. Water ski for miles on end. You may wish to bring your own canoe or kayak to explore the myriad island shorelines. Exploration of neighboring Crown lands is permitted.

Wildlife spotting and birding opportunities are plentiful. Our neighbors include chanting loons, bald eagles, white-tail deer, and black bears. Blueberry picking is exceptional from mid- to late-summer. Silence is plentiful, so bring your favorite board games and books for sunning on the deck or for after supper.

Fishing

Whether it’s off your own Friendly Passage dock or out on the water, the world-class  fishing opportunities on Rainy Lake’s eastern end is the essence of anglers’ dreams. There is no need to travel from the lee of the island to find exceptional walleye fishing. The network of nearby islands provides shelter in any breeze. Anglers come from every corner in pursuit of the plentiful smallmouth bass. And the northern pike are enormous. Early summer is known for its exceptional walleye activity, but any month brings rewards from these clean, deep and cool waters. We offer complementary live bait. Licensed guide service is available.

Boating

Guests are encouraged to bring their own boat and motor. Or kayaks and canoes. A 16-foot aluminum boat is available for rent, along with a 15 horsepower outboard motor. Docking is at the cabin’s private pier.
